Thermos Design

The commissioned client for this project is a well-known Taiwanese E-commerce brand that primarily focuses on product design, especially in the kitchenware, tableware, and home goods categories. This brand has successfully transitioned into e-commerce. The focus of this product design project was centered around the design of the thermos flask lid, while the cup's dimensions retained the factory's existing size. During the conceptualization of the product design, both parties proposed multiple innovative solutions with the aim of adding more functionality and versatility to this mature product.

In this process, we explored various usage scenarios together, including cold-brewed tea, fruit juices, coffee, and more. Our focus was on ensuring that the cup could be versatile for various beverages without causing any inconvenience to users. For example, we considered that coffee usually requires a smaller capacity and is not suitable for larger cups. Similarly, fruit juices might contain impurities, so we needed to address filtration issues. In the end, we refocused the design direction on the most fundamental purpose of a thermos flask: being suitable for drinking water and Taiwan's beloved bubble milk tea.

Once the direction was confirmed, the designer immediately started sketching the product. We observed that some thermos flasks on the market had a problem with water flow, where it was too fast and easily spilled. Therefore, the designer focused on improving the design of the spout. The designer cleverly applied the concept of fluid dynamics and made a flow-guiding design for the spout location. This design effectively prevented water from overflowing during use while achieving a smooth water flow to avoid the risk of scalding. This design concept was validated in subsequent sample tests and was eventually incorporated into the product's exterior design.

Additionally, we identified another issue that needed to be addressed, especially for people who enjoy drinking bubble tea. The problem was related to straw storage. When using a straw, the cup opening would remain exposed, making it susceptible to dust and dirt. To tackle this problem, the designer came up with an ingenious solution. We utilized a silicone strip as a securing mechanism. One end of the strip is fixed to the water spout lid, while the other end slides onto the straw. This oval-shaped silicone strip is flexible and collapsible. When you open the water spout lid, the straw is automatically raised. Conversely, when you close the water spout lid, the straw is retracted inside the cup, keeping it clean and protected from external contaminants.

The market is filled with a variety of thermal cups, each with innovative features, but our design goal goes beyond mere innovation and a flashy appearance. Our commitment is to address real usability issues, providing an improved user experience. This is the core objective of this product design project.
