However, traditional wood processing often leads to significant waste generation, increasing costs and impacting the environment. In response to the demand for sustainability, recycling waste wood has become an essential trend. Currently, waste wood is primarily used for energy production, filler materials, and other conventional purposes. However, we should recognize the untapped potential within waste wood. The basic structure of wood, including cellulose and lignin, provides valuable resources for manufacturing bio-based materials. However, traditional wood processing methods limit the application scope of waste wood.

Recently, a breakthrough study from Rice University in Houston was published in Science Advances, unveiling a new type of 3D printing "ink" made entirely from natural wood components. This marks the first product to have a genuine wood texture, as it's crafted solely from wood-derived materials. This innovation not only maximizes the utilization of various wood waste generated from product manufacturing but also allows for the recycling of materials that would otherwise be burned or discarded. It aligns perfectly with the current trend of businesses promoting eco-friendly practices.

Science Advances – Three-dimensional printing of wood

In the past, there have been various 3D printing technologies that incorporated wood cellulose fibers, but Rice University's wood-based 3D printing "ink" takes it a step further. Its primary components include cellulose nanofibers, cellulose nanocrystals, and lignin, all of which can be extracted from wood waste from various industries. Lignin is an organic polymer that constitutes a significant portion of the supporting tissues in trees, making the development of this technology not only environmentally friendly but also incredibly promising.

This wood-based ink utilizes the Direct Ink Writing (DIW) 3D printing technology, which prints the final product layer by layer. Similar to commonly used Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology, but to achieve a structure similar to natural wood and avoid internal cracks, the printing process involves several steps. Firstly, the product is frozen in a vacuum environment for 48 hours at -80°C to remove moisture and maintain its size and shape. Then, it is heated at 180°C, allowing lignin to transform into a "molecular glue," bonding cellulose and crystals together. Through this series of steps, the final product exhibits striking similarities to natural wood in appearance, structure, texture, thermal stability, and even odor.

“The ability to create a wood structure directly from its own natural components sets the stage for a more eco-friendly and innovative future,” said Muhammad Rahman, an assistant research professor of materials science and nanoengineering at Rice. “It heralds a new era of sustainable 3D-printed wood construction.”

The emergence of this wood-based ink has changed the game by allowing for the full utilization of wood waste, directly manufacturing wooden structures through 3D printing. This not only represents a new generation of digital manufacturing techniques but also brings about innovative environmental solutions for natural materials. The advent of this technology holds promise for future developments and makes significant contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

—

References：Rice researchers develop
