In the current thriving culture of part-time work, the trend of slash careers in the design industry is gaining popularity. Many designers are actively seeking freelance opportunities during their off-hours to supplement their income. As someone who has been part of this trend, I'd like to share my personal experience and discuss the skills and key points needed in the world of freelance contracting. From skills to communication, from time management to professional attitude, the freelance world is full of challenges and opportunities. Let's explore how to stand out in this emerging slash culture.<\/p>\n

My first experience with freelance projects dates back to my time pursuing a master's degree. Friends who have had similar experiences can understand that pursuing a master's degree involves dealing with the daily pressures of classes and thesis research, as well as handling industry or government-sponsored collaborative projects. From my graduation and entry into the workforce, I began taking on outsourcing projects. Later, I ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing a studio and a design company. Throughout this journey, I gradually expanded my client base, starting with local clients in Taiwan and eventually reaching clients in China, Southeast Asia, the United States, South Africa, and beyond, collaborating with clients from various industries. These years of experience have given me a profound understanding of the key points required for design freelancing.<\/p>\n

  1. Communication Skills<\/strong>
    Effective communication skills are crucial in any industry, determining the success or failure of work. Communication with colleagues, supervisors, and clients directly impacts the smoothness of work processes and the quality of results. Establishing good communication skills is essential for fostering collaboration and building solid work relationships. This includes excellent listening skills to ensure understanding of the other party's needs; clear and concise expression using straightforward language; adapting to different communication styles considering the diverse needs of colleagues, supervisors, and clients; building empathy to understand the other party's situation and perspective; speaking with facts to enhance persuasiveness; providing timely feedback to ensure the accuracy of information; and adjusting communication strategies as needed, recognizing that communication is a dynamic process that requires adaptation to different situations and audiences.

    Among these, I believe that listening is the most crucial element, and its importance even surpasses excellent expressive abilities. Communication difficulties often arise because many people listen not for the purpose of understanding but rather to counter.

    Have you ever experienced a situation like this? When expressing your ideas to a supervisor or client, they might outright reject them on the spot, without genuinely considering the feasibility of your suggestions. This could stem from differences in roles, visibility, or work experience. Regardless of the reasons, it feels like they dismiss your thoughts without proper consideration. Such responses can be frustrating and may lead to feelings of anger towards the other party.

    Similarly, as the entrusted party, we should make an effort to overcome biases and genuinely consider the suggestions and requirements coming from our clients. It is through a profound understanding of their positions, needs, and perspectives that both parties can establish mutual trust and foster a positive collaborative relationship. On the contrary, if we perceive listening as merely a means to prepare our own opinions, we might miss the opportunity to interpret others' viewpoints, further exacerbating communication barriers.<\/p>\n

    Therefore, in the process of communication, especially when dealing with different opinions and perspectives, improving listening skills becomes particularly crucial. This involves not only actively asking questions to ensure a correct understanding of the other party's intentions and prevent misunderstandings but also manifests in sincerely accepting and respecting diverse viewpoints. This helps establish an open, collaborative communication environment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. Professional Knowledge<\/strong>
    \n

    In the workplace, it's easy to fall into the misconception that colleagues, supervisors, or clients are highly familiar with all aspects of their industry. This can lead to communication gaps. As the entrusted party, we should leverage our professional knowledge to assist clients in successfully completing projects.<\/p>\n

    The importance of professional knowledge is reflected in the ability to provide a deep understanding and insight into the industry. Clients may only grasp the surface requirements of a project, lacking a comprehensive understanding of the internal workings and trends within the industry. As professionals, our expertise enables us to delve deeper into the genuine needs of clients and offer more comprehensive solutions.<\/p>\n

    Furthermore, professional knowledge enhances our efficiency and credibility in projects. For instance, considering potential manufacturing issues during the design phase and incorporating manufacturing factors into the design can facilitate the smooth development of subsequent operations. Understanding industry standard processes, best practices, and staying updated on the latest technological trends enables us to swiftly address challenges while gaining the trust of clients.

  3. A Well-Functioning Supply Chain<\/strong>
    Freelancers often hold the belief that with sufficient skills, they can meet any client's demands. However, as the famous English metaphysical poet John Donne once said, \"No man is an island,\" emphasizing that no one can live in isolation without relying on others.

    As a freelancer, it's impossible to handle all the specialized aspects of a project, such as 3D printing, reverse engineering, patent search, project management, etc., solely with individual capabilities. Therefore, establishing a robust list of suppliers can help enhance the overall service quality we provide to clients. In the case of my company, we have forged long-term partnerships with high-quality prototyping manufacturers, patent firms, and modeling designers, aiming to execute projects efficiently and comprehensively. When clients entrust their projects to us, we can manage them comprehensively, ensuring high-quality outcomes.

    With a comprehensive and well-established supply chain, I have the confidence to assure clients that my company can provide end-to-end services for the entire product development process. Through the actual experiences of clients who have collaborated with us, they have indeed felt the convenience and quality assurance that comes with entrusting their projects to us.

  4. Service Quality<\/strong>
    Service quality is a rather complex topic, and for me, it forms the foundation of all business endeavors. This encompasses integrity, product quality, customer experience, after-sales service, and all business-related actions. However, this does not mean that we should serve customers without boundaries. On the contrary, we adhere to the mindset of \"helping\" customers achieve their goals, walking together on the right path. In collaboration, we strive to understand the needs of customers, provide appropriate advice and solutions, ensuring that our services genuinely contribute to the realization of their objectives.

    Some might argue that only the service industry needs to focus on service quality. In the past, simply \"smiling\" was enough to satisfy most customers. However, nowadays, service quality is no longer something that can be easily established by just smiling; it has evolved beyond that to build a loyal customer base.

    Here's an example involving a friend: During the process of scheduling an appointment with a hair stylist for hair coloring, the initial quote provided by the stylist was NTD1,500. However, during the checkout, additional charges for trimming, hair treatment, and shampooing surfaced, ultimately leading to my friend paying NTD3,000, which was equivalent to the cost of the initial full hair coloring. Frustrated by this situation, my friend questioned why all the additional charges were not clearly explained during the initial quote. Additionally, he expressed the viewpoint that hair coloring should include shampooing and hair treatment. This pricing approach raised concerns about the integrity of the salon, and my friend stated that he would no longer be patronizing that establishment.

    The above example illustrates that service quality goes beyond just \"doing things right\"; consumer experience is also a crucial factor. Due to consumers' lack of understanding of industry processes and the absence of clear explanations regarding service items, it can lead to a subpar consumer experience.
