In 2016, I worked as a product development engineer in a foreign multinational company, responsible for executing a research and development project for a smart instant hot water dispenser. This product not only had to adhere to the company's principle of developing from scratch, but also needed to possess characteristics for sustainable development and should not be a rebranded version of existing products in the market.

So, if it were you, how would you report the development plan to the company?

At the beginning, my conceptualization was more traditional, proposing a comprehensive package of exterior design and functional concepts, believing that having a cool appearance and cutting-edge features would be enough to capture the attention of both the company and consumers. However, these concepts were rejected by the company due to reasons such as a lengthy development cycle, assembly difficulties, and excessive costs, which would impact the product's price competitiveness.

Later, through extensive data collection and in-depth discussions, our team concluded that modular design was an effective approach to solving the problem, capable of reducing development cycles and costs. Let's briefly discuss what modular design is :

1. What is modular design?

Modular design, also known as module design, is a design approach that involves breaking down a product into different modules or components. Each module has a specific function and can be independently designed, and they are then combined to form a complete system. Similar to building blocks, modules are composed of simple components and are assembled to create various model configurations.

In our daily lives, products with modular design are ubiquitous. Examples include electronics, automobiles, furniture, and home appliances. These products are assembled from small components into parts, then these parts are combined into modules, and finally, the modules are assembled into the finished product. These components can be replaced, modified, added, or removed without affecting the overall design.

Similarly, in our instant hot water dispenser design, we can consider aspects such as appearance, mechanics, components, and electronic control as different modules. We designate the heater, electronic control, and internal structure as the core of development, set the specifications, and ultimately assemble these modules into a complete final product of the instant hot water dispenser. This approach allows for iterative design or product upgrades based on market demands, cost considerations, and assembly considerations.

2. The benefits of modular design

Modular design exhibits different advantages in various fields. Taking our household appliance products as an example, here are five benefits of adopting modular design: flexibility and personalization, enhanced production efficiency, ease of maintenance and upgrades, cost savings, and rapid market responsiveness.

Flexibility and Personalization
Modular design allows products to be customized according to the needs of customers and consumers because different modules can be combined according to specific requirements. This provides greater flexibility and personalized choices, meeting the unique demands of the market. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people wanted to minimize contact with surfaces, a touchless smart detection water dispenser was planned. Due to modular design, by adding sensors and modifying the electronic control, a completely new product could be quickly introduced.

Enhanced Production Efficiency
Due to the ability to independently design, test, and manufacture each module, this contributes to increased production efficiency. Simultaneously, it reduces the risk of errors in the manufacturing process because each module can be individually inspected and optimized. For example, we designed a modular motor bracket; regardless of how many versions the product is upgraded, the assembly process for the motor remains the same. This not only streamlines the production line but also enhances design and development efficiency.

Easy Maintenance and Upgrades
The modular structure makes the maintenance of the product simpler. When a single module encounters an issue, it can be replaced or repaired independently without affecting the entire product. Additionally, it facilitates upgrades, as mentioned earlier, by adding new modules to introduce new features. This allows customers to easily adapt to new technologies and styles.

Cost Savings
Modular design has been proven to be highly effective in reducing development and manufacturing costs. Each module can be independently produced when needed, effectively reducing material waste and warehouse expenses. When designing new products, there's no need to start from scratch. Existing modules can be directly applied to optimize new designs, reducing development timelines and various testing costs.

Rapid Market Responsiveness
Adopting modular design makes it easier to quickly launch new products. Existing modules can be recombined and paired, allowing for continuous development to meet the ever-changing market and new demands.

The advantages of modular design go beyond this; they bring distinctive benefits in various fields, including maintaining consistent outputs and facilitating collaboration. In a project, without standardized specifications, the involvement of multiple designers may lead to the emergence of various styles, with different assembly methods, specifications for components, and cost planning. This is clearly not conducive to the progress of development.

Therefore, establishing appropriate standards and collaborative components is a crucial aspect. For those components with high reusability, we can apply modularization.

3. The trends in modular design

Modular design has become a predominant trend in the current design and development industry, especially in areas such as 3C (computing, communication, and consumer electronics), transportation, and household products. The following summarizes some trends in modular design: personalization and customization, sustainability, technology integration, and globalization.

Personalization and Customization
In the current era of oversupply and product abundance, consumers' demand for personalization and customization is continuously rising. To enhance competitiveness, brands must constantly innovate. However, this also imposes significant cost pressures on manufacturers. In such an environment, the modular design approach undoubtedly provides more personalized solutions while alleviating cost competitiveness issues.

Sustainability
Adopting modular design helps reduce waste, enhance efficient resource utilization, aligning with the modern emphasis on sustainability and environmental conservation in design. This is especially crucial as businesses face the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance indicators outlined by the UN Global Compact and the gradual implementation of carbon emission regulations worldwide. Effective development methods are essential to achieve sustainable development in this context.

Technology Integration
With the thriving development of the technology industry, emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, big data, and embedded sensors have emerged successively. These technologies are closely related to design and development. Modular design facilitates the seamless integration of these new technological elements, making products more intelligent and convenient.

Globalization
With the widespread popularity of the Internet and the transparency of information, society has entered the era of globalization. Modern enterprises must face the reality of product diversification, being able to sell products globally, and sourcing suppliers and manufacturers worldwide. Modular design is a design pattern that aligns with the global trend. For example, we can supply a meticulously designed heater module to other water dispenser brands. These brands can obtain a plug-and-play module without the need for labor-intensive redevelopment. Modular design makes global collaboration more accessible.

Designers should consider adopting modular design as a foundation to provide more flexible and personalized solutions, while also simplifying the manufacturing and assembly processes. This approach enables companies to have a more straightforward product development model. Not only does it align with the trends in modern enterprise development, but it also serves as an effective strategy for adapting flexibly to market changes.
